@edintfest never fails to curate some of the most memorable programs out there.

What I appreciate about them most is their insistence on honest, meaningful casting for those projects. I know when I get a phone call from the Edinburgh Fest team, it's going to be a brilliant idea that speaks directly to my heart.

It was true for West Side Story.
It was true for Golijov's 'La Pasión según San Marcos'
And it remained true for Tavener's 8 hour masterpiece 'Veil of the Temple'.

My deepest thanks to @edintfest for seeing the various aspects of my personhood and calling it forth in these beautiful projects. I can't wait to see what's next :)

Immensely honored to have shared the stage with conductor @sofijeannin , an absolute powerhouse, as well as the over 200 singers and musicians who also rocked the Usher Hall that day.

I was honored to meet the Tavener family and celebrate this music together alongside my amazing partner, Peter, who missed maybe 15 minutes to grab a coffee but otherwise rode the rollercoaster of this 8 hour event. 🤍

Finally taking some time after riding the perfect Poulenc wave to offer even more gratitude to the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra.

Choosing the life of an artist often means choosing a most unstable lifestyle. Beautiful, but chaotic. Always on the road. Never sure how full... Or sparse your calendar will look. Always grasping at normalcy. Trying to create great art while simultaneously advocating fiercly for your needs in an ever evolving (for better and worse) musical society.

To be totally honest. I have moments when it's all just too much. Moments I creep awfully close to the "F*** this" button and emergency eject out of the industry all together.

But once in a while, all the stars align. Once in a while you fall into a blissful experience that reaffirms why you're doing it at all.

Singing music you love
with a committed and enthusiastic ensemble
with a conductor who values your specific voice
with an organization that pays you well and on time
with a staff that ensures you have tea and snacks backstage
with a hall full of diverse audience members
with an atmosphere of passion, respect, and high standard.

I'm so grateful I said 'YES' to this opportunity with the amazing @kcsymphony. I'm sure I'll be back very soon :)

It's a fantastic reminder that we artists do our best work when we are supported and given a space to thrive.
I find myself wondering why I ever settled for so much less in so many other opportunities. That's the learning I'm carrying with me for now 🤍

Finally taking some time after riding the perfect Poulenc wave to offer even more gratitude to the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra.

George Crumb’s music has jostled in many of my suitcases and school backpacks over the years as a growing artist. From singing his American Songbook on my famously BANNED Eastman senior recital … to being assigned Ancient Voices of Children at Tanglewood in 2015, coached closely by the magnificent Dawn Upshaw.
His music has been there with me through the ups and downs of my life and musical career. His music has brought me to stage with LA Phil and Zubin Mehta, to Moscow, Perm, St. Petersburg, Hamburg and Munich with Teodor Currentzis.
His music also filled the programs that Daniel Gerzenberg and I curated. Both of us becoming closer and closer friends and collaborators as we fell deeper and deeper into the mysterious sounds and rhythms of The Sleeper, Apparition, Songs of Sun and Shadow, and the Yellow Moon of Andalucía.

I remember sitting at the Eastman Sibley library listening to records of my first singing heroines, Cathy Berberian and Jan DeGaetani, completely dedicated to their use of color and vocal timbre to make any sound they desired… total vocal liberation.

I truly cannot believe that I am being given the opportunity to add my voice to the recorded history of George Crumb’s music alongside the recordings of Tony Arnold, Jan DeGaetani, Christine Schäfer, Ann Crumb and other great new music artists. . And with my best friend giving some of the best piano playing I’ve ever heard!

It's time I shared a bit of what I've been up to these last few years. :)

Let's start with today. As of right now, I am halfway through with the certification process of becoming an Authentic Tantra Practitioner via @authentictantra. Come November, I will have embodied so many beautiful practices such as elemental meditation, union breathing, ocean breath, tantric massage, nonviolent communication, pleasure practice/awareness, partner massage, and somatic healing - all energized by the spiritual motor of Tibetan Buddhism (Shangpa Kagyu Lineage).

This has been a relatively private process for me so far, as I've needed space and time to find myself again after ending my relationship in 2021. But I'm really excited to share more and more about this journey, which has brought me so much light and goddess energy .. something I thought I would never find again.

It's also worth mentioning (probably deserving of its own post) that in February I became a certified life coach via @ipeccoaching!

Life coaching is a forward momentum energy. Goal setting. Accountability. Visioning. Action. It quite literally kept me moving forward when I just wanted to collapse. It gave me the strength (yang energy) I needed to move just one step more. Still, you can't always move forward. Eventually you have to sit with yourself, in silence.. which can be pretty freaking miserable if you don't particularly like what you see in the mirror. Or haven't felt your soul stir in what feels like forever.

Then, I found the Institute of Authentic Tantra. I found my BIPOC Sangha (community) all craving the healing I was. I found mentors who walked and spoke with power and grace in their deep and dark skin. I found my coven of sisters who laughed wildly while braiding their hair and sharing their dreams. I found peace in my stillness and wisdom in my silence. Yin energy. I found a dharma that asks me, compels me, urges me to practice godessness.

This week has left me ignited. There's so much to come and so much pleasure to be had.

And I'm taking you all with me ;)

Words can hardly capture this magical evening, performing alongside my best friend for a full house in the historic center of the city.

Teatro Degollado is stunningly beautiful. Equally beautiful was the energy I felt from each and every person seated in the audience. These were people who yelled and applauded with joy after every song. People who really listened. People with so much love and gratitude for music. And I'm so grateful that some of those faces included by mama, my best friends, and so many other familiar faces. To be surrounded by so much love on stage is unlike anything else.

We were given full creative liberty and presented something directly from our hearts. From our beloved George Crumb to Hugo Wolf and Carlos Guastavino to Alberto Ginastera. But most thrilling, was performing arrangements of Puerto Rican folksongs that I selected as the beginning of what I hope will be a much larger cycle representing Puerto Rican music. I am so grateful for Marie Crooke who gave me her blessing to learn and present her song Mi Gente Taino, which gives voice to our indigenous Puerto Rican ancestors. We also performed a song I discovered from black and white films of old Puerto Rico. We even sang the hit, Lamento Borincano.

And in true Daniel/Sophia style, we performed an improvisation for the public featuring the tremendous poetry of @mardecir, Pájaro que cae. This is just the beginning of many collaborations with the strong, inspiring, and beautiful people of la Isla del encanto 🤍

We were received by a full house standing ovation and so many meaningful words. I will absolutely never forget this performance. This night. This country. These people.

Muchísimas gracias, Guadalajara. Y a todos en el Festival Cultural de Mayo Jalisco. Un fuerte abrazo!

ATARA by Chaya Czernowin

I've been worrying about this piece for months. It was originally written (perfectly so) for Sofia Jernberg. Our voices are as opposite as can be, within the soprano categorization.

This piece demands LOTS of high notes, pianissississimo, with a kind of breathy and sotto voce quality. Something Sofia's instrument is completely at home in.

Today was the first rehearsal and, while I could "swing it" it was in no way the intended character of the piece. I know what Chaya is going for, but in that range I just don't have enough flexibility for those sounds.

Immediately, my thoughts went to:

-Why did they ask ME to sing this?
-I'm a soprano, I SHOULD be able to do this!
-This is so embarrassing, what am I going to do?
-I'm not doing this piece any justice!

Then Chaya did something BEAUTIFUL.

She came to me after rehearsal, giddy with excitement, saying:

"Sophia! This is an opportunity to explore a NEW version of my piece! Your version."

She then proceeded to adjust MOST of the vocal line, rewriting it to what she found very specifically special in MY voice.
As I sang the new version for her, she smiled wide and laughed in joy, high fiving me.

"NOW you can really see the character through your eyes. In fact, it doesn't sound so different from the original. Because now the character of the piece is HONEST in your voice".

THIS is a true, collaborative spirit.

LA Philharmonic debut ✅

This has been one big fever dream of a week. And I'm so grateful for every second of it.

It's crazy to think that just a week ago I was so feeling so unsure about so many things. Some productions had fallen through, as sometimes happens in freelance life. I was worried about my financial stability. I was frustrated I still wasn't working in the US as much as I wanted to. I wanted the security of home. Friends. Family. So much felt so far away.

And in one phone call, I received the most perfect opportunity.. seemingly crafted just for me.

Some very important lessons were affirmed this week.

1. My timing is perfect. Everything will unfold exactly when it is meant to. As long as I continue my practice, bettering myself, my craft, refining my purpose and intentions, it will all come.

2. You cannot mess up what is meant to be yours. If it's meant for you, it will be. And when you can recognize clearly what is meant to be yours, you can enjoy and cherish it fully.

I'm incredibly grateful to the @laphil , @zubin.mehta.official , @waltdisneyconcerthall , my friends/family showed support and everyone involved.

Today I visited @neozagoffin in her Ghent studio to contribute to her 💜Lilac Diversity💜 series.

Neoza blindfolded me and painted me lilac from head to toe as Navy explored her beautiful art space.

During the process we had profound conversations. Relationship dynamics. Our gender identities. Struggles. Our giant, overwhelming dreams. Technology. The spiritual destitution of modern society. Balance. Polarity. The everything in between.

Neoza took pictures of me in my lilac skin, as she has done with many other diverse and unique bodies. I am so honored to be a part of her collection. So grateful to exchange philosophies with an inspiring artist.

I can't wait to see what she captured of me. My dreads. My eyes. My folds. My tummy. My thick thighs. My nose. My rolls. My toes. Hair, wherever it grows. Slender fingers. A unique and special collection of features bestowed onto me by my parents, their parents, their parent's parents, and beyond.
